Pat Chapdelaine, Executive Vice President, Operations/Tech Design – NYGARD Moderate
Where were you born?
I was born in Winnipeg, MB but spent much of my formative years (from ages 10 to 17) in a small mining town in Northwestern Ontario.
What were your hobbies as a kid?
I was into reading, baseball and both tap and folk dancing.
Were you always fashion conscious? If so, give me an example. If not, when did you first start becoming interested in fashion?
With the exception of my teenage years, where like most kids followed fads like crinolines under flared skirts, which interestingly resurfaced when I started to work at NGYARD, I actually wasn’t very fashion conscious.
What was your first job? What lesson did you learn from it that has always stuck with you?
My first job was waitressing and I think what has stuck with me the most from that experience is that hard work usually pays off.
Why did you want to get into the fashion industry…or did you?
Actually, I didn’t. I accepted a position in the accounting department and have mostly been on the administrative and operations side of the business from day one.
What was your first industry position?
Accounting clerk.
What is your current role?
Executive VP of Tech Design/Operations.
What are the joys of what you do?
There are a number of things I really enjoy. But in particular I enjoy building relationships, negotiating and solving problems.
What are the challenges of what you do?
I’d have to say that it’s a challenge tieing together order placing and On time deliveries with good quality.
What has been your favourite industry experience?
Definitely, living and working in Hong Kong, which I did for five years.
What is your body jewel?
I’m a pear jewel.
What fashion advice would you offer others with the same body jewel?
To see NYGARD’s resident fashionista Martha House.
How would you define your style and why?
It really depends on the occasion, but I’m mostly Sporty-Casual with a mix of Traditional-Sophisticate.
What was the best fashion advice you have ever received?
When in doubt, wear BLACK!
What’s your favourite NYGARD piece and why?
I have this timeless doe suede, animal print jacket from Tan Jay that can be worn in Spring and Fall. After five or six years, I still wear it. NYGARD Fashion president, Jim Bennett commented on the color story it represented just a couple weeks ago.
Having worked closely with Peter Nygard, what stands out about him?
Two things definitely set him apart from others. First, his work ethic. He will doesn’t just work as long and as hard as anyone, he works harder and therefore sets the standard. And second, his foresight. He is constantly looking five to 10 years down the road, which is remarkable.
